There are 54 #Muslim
countries, all ranging in size. There are large countries like
Indonesia that have over 200 million Muslims, and Bangladesh, in which
the Muslim population reach well over 125 million. Then there are
countries as tiny as the Maldives or Brunei, each having Muslim
populations around 250,000.
Today, even in non-Muslim countries, a SIGNIFICANT portion of the population are followers of #Islam.
In fact, there are as many as 120 million Muslims in India and 20
million in China. In most European countries, as well as America and
Canada, within the last 50 years, Islam has become the second LARGEST #Religion.
REGARDLESS of race or ethnicity, whether in Asia, Europe, Africa or
America, we can be sure to find BILLIONS of other Muslims, men and women
alike, from ALL social classes. Each of us live our lives loving Allah ï·»
and trying to emulate the Prophet Muhammad ï·º's #Sunnah.
The Prophet ï·º brings light and #Peace to our hearts and lives. In him, we find our GREATEST source of inspiration, and through the example of his life, we find the #Divine Guidance of #Allah ï·». For each of us, he is UNQUESTIONABLY the ULTIMATE example of #Righteous living.
Faith in Allah ï·» is our mainstay, in which the Prophet ï·º is our source

Through his life's example, we can believe that Allah ï·» had spoken to
him, as well as the Prophets before him. They were each EXCEPTIONAL
humans, living amongst the common civilization. The Prophets of Allah ï·»
acted as guides to mankind by setting a model for moral, righteous
living, valid in ALL eras to come. Even today, the Prophet Muhammad ï·º
motivates and induces each of us to yearn to do better for ourselves,
our families and communities. It is through his Sunnah that we strive to
shape our private lives, politics and policies.
WHO is this inspirational man named Muhammad ï·º?
After Isa ❪Jesus, AS❫, in the year 570, the Prophet Muhammad ï·º had been born in the ancient Arabian city of Makkah.
Arabia, by ALL accounts, is the cradle of the human race. All of the
OLDEST human remains found, thus far, come from locations in and around
this area. Makkah is located in the area that is known today as #SaudiArabia. Though the country has changed, centuries later, the city still bears the name Makkah.
Then a small merchant town, Makkah sits on what is known as the ancient
“incense route,” about 80 kilometers to the east of the #RedSea. Bordered by volcanic hills, great trade caravans had once passed through this area.
Makkah had been important then, and remains so, though today for an altogether different reason. It is here that #Kabbah had been built. The Kabbah is the First House, EVER, that had been built for mankind to #Worship the One True #God,
Allah ï·». The Prophet Ibrahim ❪Abraham, AS❫, aided by his elder son, the
Prophet Ismael ❪Ishmael, AS❫, had raised its walls on very ancient
foundations.
The Kabbah had been built MORE than 1,000 YEARS before the Prophet Sulaiman ❪Solomon, AS❫ had built his temple in Jerusalem.
The well known as Zam Zam lies near the Kabbah. Its origin goes back to
the Prophet Ibrahim ❪AS❫'s time, as well. It was this well which had
sprang up miraculously to save the life of the infant Prophet Ismael
❪AS❫.
According to the Torah:
❝And Allah ï·» heard the
voice of the boy; and the Angel of Allah ï·» called to Hajar ❪Hagar, AS❫
out of heaven, and said to her, ❛What ails you, Hajar ❪AS❫? Fear not,
for Allah ï·» has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Arise, lift up
the boy, and hold him in your hand; for I will make him a great nation.❜
And Allah ï·» opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went,
and filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy a drink. And Allah ï·»
was with the boy; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became
an archer.❞ ❨Tawrat ❪Torah❫, Genesis 21:17-20, Old Testament, #Bible/New International Version❩
In Psalms:
❝As they pass through the dry Valley of Baca, it becomes a place of
springs; the early rain fills it with pools.❞ ❨Zabur ❪Ketuvim❫, Psalms
84:6, Old Testament, Bible/New International Version❩
In nearby
Taif and Madina, there had been springs and wells abundant with water.
The area of Makkah, however, was so barren and desolate that even the
grass did not grow. Being so, there had NEVER been ANY worldly
attraction to this area for those wishing to build settlements.
Even still, the barren Makkah became the MOST remarkable fountain and
spring of life, spiritually and civilizationally. The erection of the
architecturally unremarkable Cube, the very FIRST House of Allah ï·», near
the Zam Zam Well had made it SUPREMELY important. It became a place of
attraction for people from all over the world... FOREVER. Makkah has
been, and forever will be, the Great Center of Pilgrimage... The Well of
Life.
The tribe of Quraysh, then the Kabbah's guardians, had
more than 300 idols within and around the Kabbah by the time the Prophet
Muhammad ï·» was born. These idols had been worshipped as lords, gods and
intercessors, besides the One True God, Allah ï·».
The Prophet
Muhammad ï·º is a DIRECT descendant of the Prophet Ibrahim ❪AS❫, through
the Prophet Ismael ❪AS❫. He was of the noble clan of Banu Hashim, from
the tribe of Quraysh, the same tribe that had been the guardians of the
Kabbah.
🔹
The Quraysh tribe had been financially poor but politically strong.
They had been guardians of the Kabbah ❪House of Allah ï·»❫ and Makkah
❪Center of Pilgrimage for ALL of Arabia❫. The tribe had ranked HIGHER in
dignity and power than ANY other tribe.
🔹 The Banu Hashim clan had held the high office of levying taxes and had provided the pilgrims with food and water.
Raised as an orphan, the Prophet Muhammad ï·º's father, Abdullah, had
died before he was born. When he was only six years old, his mother,
Aminah, had passed away as well.
As was the custom of all noble
families in Makkah during those times, the infant Prophet ï·º had been
sent to the desert. After his birth, he was to be suckled and weaned
among a Bedouin tribe, Bani Sa‘d ibn Bakr. The Bedouin are nomads, who
live in the desert of southeast Makkah. Bedouin tribes still exist to
this day. With them, he had been destined to spend part of his
childhood.
After the passing of his mother, his grandfather, Abd
al Muttalib, had cared for him. Two years later, having been bereaved of
his grandfather, his Uncle Abu Talib had taken the orphaned boy into
his care. Growing up, the Prophet Muhammad ï·º had pastured sheep and
goats, as most Prophets before him had, to earn his livelihood.
Accompanying his uncle, he had traveled with the trade caravans into
greater Syria, gaining experience in trading. His reputation for honest,
diligent trading grew. Due to the business acumen he had showed, those
who could not travel themselves, soon sought him out to manage their
merchandize.
The young Prophet Muhammad ï·º had once
enthusiastically joined a chivalrous oath that had made amongst certain
chiefs of the Quraysh, in which they had vowed that “henceforth, they
would stand together as one man on the side of the oppressed, against
the oppressor, until justice was done, whether the oppressed were people
of the Quraysh or those who had come from abroad.” This vow had been
for the establishment of justice, to protect the weak and oppressed.
In Madina years later, the Prophet Muhammad ï·º would remember the oath
that had made between the chiefs of his tribe and had recalled, ❝I was
present in the house of Abd Allah ibn Jud'an, at so excellent a pact
that I would not exchange my part in it for a herd of red camels, and if
now in Islam, I were summoned to a similar pact, I would gladly
respond.❞
At the age of 25, the Prophet Muhammad ï·º had married a
widow, his first wife Khadijah ❪RA❫. 15 years older than the Prophet ï·º,
she had been a rich merchant of Makkah, whose trade affairs the Prophet
Muhammad ï·º had managed. She had proposed the marriage herself and had
been his closest friend, companion and advocate. She had remained his
wife until her death, 25 years later. Four daughters had survived of the
six children they had had, and during her lifetime, he had never took
other wives.
Showing no signs of being the Prophet ï·º he was to
become, his life had been very uneventful. What had set him apart from
his compatriots was his COMPLETE refusal to worship ANY Idol. He had
NEVER succumbed to immorality and had been popularly acclaimed for the
qualities of:
🔹 ABSOLUTE Truthfulness
🔹 Trustworthiness
🔹 Integrity
🔹 Sense of Justice
🔹 Compassion, for the:
❈ Poor
❈ Oppressed
❈ Downtrodden
At 40, the Prophet Muhammad ï·º had been known by the titles “al Amin
❪the Trustworthy, the Honest❫” and “as Sadiq ❪the Truthful❫.”
“Muhammad,” itself, means “Praised One.”
As Khadijah ❪RA❫ had
comforted him after the first Revelation had came to him, she had given
testimony of his character. He would later recall, ❝As I feared for my
life, she had replied, ❛By no means! I swear by Allah ï·» that Allah ï·»
will never lose you. You join ties of relationship, speak truth, bear
other's burdens, earn for the poor, entertain guests, and help guard
against the vicissitudes which affect the people's rights.❜❞
The
Prophet Muhammad ï·º’s wisdom had been acknowledged by ALL who had known
him. There was a time that the various clans of the Quraysh had disputed
while repairing the Kabbah. They had been arguing about who should have
the honor of placing the Black Stone in its place. As the argument has
threatened to become violent and the men had unsheathed their swords,
preparing to battle, the Prophet ï·º had been made their arbitrator. He
then had brought them back to a semblance of peace. Placing the Black
Stone on his cloak, he had asked ALL the clan chiefs to hold its edges.
As they raised it, he had placed the Black Stone in its appointed spot
with his own hands.
🔸 MADINAH
The Prophet ï·º had suffered the terrible loss of Khadijah ❪RA❫, his
beloved wife of 25 years, and then his Uncle Abu Talib. His uncle had
been his guardian and protector against the bloodthirsty tribesmen of
Makkah who had rejected the Message of Allah ï·». He had then encountered
rejection, humiliation and the worst types of persecution in nearby
Taif.
As the Prophet ï·º reached the lowest point in his life,
Allah ï·» had brought him comfort and solace. Spiritually, He had took him
through the spectacular events in what would become known as “Isra and
Mi'raj ❪Night of Ascension, or Night Journey❫,” through the heights of
realities and divinities, face to face with the Unseen.
Materially, soon after the Prophet Muhammad ï·º returned from Taif and the
Night Journey, Allah ï·» had opened the hearts of people to His Message.
At the time of the Pilgrimage, six men from Yathrib had embraced Islam.
This gave the Prophet Muhammad ï·º the hope he had needed to continue on
in the Divine Mission Allah ï·» had entrusted in him.
Yathrib had
been a small oasis 400 kilometers to the north of Makkah. This small
town was destined to be the center for the Divine Light that had spread
to every corner of the earth, throughout every generation to come.
Today, this town is known as “Madinatun Nabi the City of the Prophet ï·º❫”
or “Madinah Munawwara ❪Radiant City❫.”
The Prophet ï·º,
accompanied by the six men from Yathrib, had delivered the Message of
Islam to as many as they could. By the time of the next Pilgrimage, in
the year 621 CE, 12 people had accompanied him back to Makkah.
Pledging not disobey the Prophet ï·º in that which was right, they had vowed that they would never:
🔹 Take a god beside Allah ﷻ
🔹 Steal
🔹 Commit Fornication
🔹 Slay Their Infants
🔹 Utter Slanders
The Prophet ï·º had said, ❝If you fulfill this pledge, then Paradise is yours.❞
The Prophet ï·º had then stayed in Makkah to strive in the Cause of Allah
ï·» and sent Musab ibn Umayr ❪RA❫ with them back to Yathrib. He was to
teach them the Quran and Islam, and spread the Message of Islam. As the
year had progressed, the men and women of Yathrib had embraced Islam.
Even tribal leaders had become Muslims.
By the time of the next
Pilgrimage a year later, they had sent a delegation to the Prophet ï·º to
make a pledge to him. The delegation had consisted of 73 men and 2 women
and they had met with the Prophet ï·º in Aqabah. They had pledged that
they protect him, against ALL men, as they would protect their own
families, even if they suffered the loss of all their possessions. They
had declared that even if their nobles were killed, they would continue
on in battle. When the Prophet ï·º had been asked what the reward would be
if they fulfilled their pledge, he had answered, ❝Paradise.❞
They had invited the Prophet ï·º and the persecuted and tortured Muslims
in Makkah to Yathrib, the Home of Islam. They had opened the road to
Madina and offered a safe sanctuary from which the Divine Message of
Islam could be spread. He had instructed the Muslims to emigrate, and
gradually most of them had found their way to Yathrib. Thus, the
foundations of an Islamic society, state and civilization had been set.
Having had known the power of the Prophet ï·º’s Message, their foes in
Makkah could not bear to see the Muslims living in peace. They had known
the strength of the dedicated believers who would fight for their faith
and cared nothing for age old Arab customs and ties of kinship. Their
presence in Madina had posed a danger to their northern trade routes.
They conspired to kill the Prophet ï·º, having had decided that it would
be the only way to protect their interests.
Each clan had then
nominated a well connected, strong, young man from their ranks. As the
Prophet ï·º came out of his home one morning, they were to converge upon
him, at once, killing him. Thus, his blood would have been on ALL the
clans' hands, forcing the Prophet ï·º’s clan to accept blood money in
place of revenge.
The Angel Jibreel had informed the Prophet ï·º
of the plot and instructed him to leave Makkah for Madina. Following the
Angel's orders, the Prophet ï·º had went to Abu Bakr ❪RA❫'s house to
finalize travel arrangements. Overjoyed at having been chosen for the
blessed honor of being the Prophet ï·º’s Companion on this sacred and
momentous epoch, he had offered his she-camel to the Prophet ï·º, but the
Prophet ï·º had insisted on paying its price.
As darkness fell one
fateful night, the youth that had been selected by the Quraysh clans to
kill the Prophet ï·º surrounded his house. They had decided to pounce
upon him as he came out of his home for Fajr Namaz.
Meanwhile,
Ali had offered to lie in the Prophet ï·º's bed. After he had handed Ali
❪RA❫ the money that had been left with him by the Makkans for safe
keeping, the Prophet ï·º slipped out of his house. He threw a little dust
in the direction of his enemies, whose eyes had still been on the house,
and walked past them safely. After meeting Abu Bakr ❪RA❫ at his home,
they had traveled together to Jabal Thur, a nearby cave.
The
Quraysh had been furious when they realized that the Prophet ï·º had
evaded them. They had looked everywhere for him. A reward of 100
she-camels had been offered to anyone who could bring the Prophet ï·º to
them, dead or alive.
The Prophet ï·º had been sighted by Suraqa, a
clan chief of the Quraysh tribe. Hoping to earn the reward that had
been posted for his capture, the chief followed in close pursuit. Facing
an uncertain future ahead him in Madina, while pursued by bloodthirsty
foes, the Prophet ï·º had told Suraqa, ❝A day will soon come when Kisra's
golden hand bracelet will be in your hands.❞ Upon hearing this, Suraqa
had retreated and the Prophet ï·º proceeded toward Madina.
10
kilometers outside Madina, the Prophet ï·º had made his first sojourn in
Qubah. It was there that he had built the first Masjid and made his
first public address. He had advised the people, ❝Spread peace among
yourselves, give the food to needy, and pray while people sleep. By
this, you enter Paradise, the House of Peace.❞
In the month of
Hijrah, during the time of Pilgrimage, an event would prove to be a
pivotal threshold in shaping the Islamic Ummah. This small space in time
would become a mighty leap in history.
As the Prophet ï·º had
entered Madina three days later, the ENTIRE populace came out into the
streets to greet him. Men, women and children alike, had jubilantly
welcomed him. There had NEVER been a day of greater rejoicing and
happiness. The little children had sang, ❝Come is the Prophet ï·º! Come is
the Prophet ï·º!❞
After arriving in Madina, the first thing the
Prophet ï·º had done was mend the relations between the Muhajirs
❪Emigrants❫ and the Ansar ❪hosts, called “Helpers”❫ into one
brotherhood. One person from amongst the Muhajirs was made brother to
one from amongst the Ansar. The Ansar had offered to equally share all
that they possessed with the Muhajirs. Until this very day, this
brotherhood remains the hallmark of the Ummah. This event had forged the
Ummah into a close knit community of faith and brotherhood. This event
built the structure of our society and became the blueprint of our
character.
He then had raised his first building in Madina,
“Masjid al Nabawi ❪the Prophet ï·º’s Masjid❫,” and consecrated it to the
worship of the One True God, Allah ï·». Since then, the Masjid has
remained the cornerstone of the social and collective life of the Ummah.
It has served as a convenient space for the integration of the
religious and political dimensions of Islam. To this day, it remains a
source of identification and has been a witness to the Ummah's birth,
struggle and existence.
Steps were then taken to build the
necessary institutions which would serve to integrate entire communities
around the pivotal institution of the worship of the One True God,
Allah ï·». For this purpose, Five Daily Prayers within congregations had
been established. These events, in such a short period, are the reasons
we date our calendar from Hijrah, and not from Hira or the birth of the
Prophet ï·º.
It was during these days that Sawm, fasting from dawn
to sunset the entire month of Ramadan, had been prescribed. Similarly,
it was then that the establishment of Zakat, a charitable donation of a
percentage of one’s wealth given in the Way of Allah ï·», was made an
obligatory part of life.
As Muslims, we follow the same practices
observed by Jews and Christians, unless different instructions had came
from Allah ï·». As an example, the very first Muslims had once prayed
with their faces turned towards Jerusalem. Soon, the direction was
changed from Jerusalem to Makkah. This change had signalled the
formation of the new Muslim Ummah. Charged with Divine Trust through
Allah ï·»’s Guidance, Islam had replaced the earlier misguided faiths of
Judaism and Christianity. Islam follows the MOST ancient Message that
had been given to the Prophet Musa ❪AS❫. While praying, Muslims face
toward the Kabbah, the MOST ancient House of Allah ï·» that had been built
by the Prophet Ibrahim ❪AS❫ and his elder son, the Prophet Ismael ❪AS❫.
🔸 ATTACKED BY MAKKAH
After he had arrived in Madina, he first formed an alliance with the
Jews. The Prophet ï·º had then approached all the nearby tribes. He had
tried to persuade them into making an alliance, or at least enter into a
peace treaties. As many of them had, the small group that had been
evicted from Makkah assumed it to be a strategic importance.
In
the second year after Hijrah, having had failed in their plans to kill
the Prophet ï·º, the tribal leaders of Makkah decided on military action.
Determined to annihilate the nascent Islamic community, they had sent a
heavily armed force marching toward Madina on the pretext of protecting
their trade caravan. Despite the community's small number and lack of
arms, the Prophet ï·º had decided that they would face their threat
boldly.
The two forces had met at Badr, on the 17th of Ramadan.
Seventy of the most active clan chiefs that had been vehement in
persecuting Muslims were killed. 313 Muslims had fought a battle in
which they defeated a Makkan army 1,000 men strong!!! Those who had been
taken prisoner, were later released for ransom. For the first time,
prisoners of war had been treated humanely and kindly. They had been fed
and housed in the same way as their captors had.
In another
attempt to defeat the Muslims, in the third year after Hijrah, an army
from Makkah had once again marched on Madina. Though the Muslims had
numbered only 700, they had faced a Makkan force 3,000 men strong that
were intent on avenging the defeat at Badr. 700 of them had been mailed
and 200 mounted. Just outside Madina, the two armies had met near the
Uhud Mountain. The Muslim contingent that had been posted to protect the
rear, had violated the Prophet ï·º’s instructions and abandoned their
position. The Quraysh clans had attacked from behind, which resulted in
the deaths of about 65 Muslims. However, the forces from Makkah had
failed to pursue their advantage to clinch victory.
In the fifth
year after Hijrah, to settle the matter once and for all, the Makkans
had planned to make a final assault on Madina. Aided by all the Bedouin
tribes and Jews, along with the hypocrites within Madina, a force of
24,000 had advanced on Madina. By sheer numbers, it had been impossible
to defend Madina, which was without walls, or fight them on the open
battlefield. Therefore, by digging ditches all round Madina, the Muslims
had defended themselves. Makkah had laid siege to Madina for 25 days,
but their army was forced to withdraw due to inner dissension, lack of
supplies, cold weather and high winds. This had became the turning point
of the ongoing war with the clans of the Quraysh tribe from Makkah,
after which Madina was never to be attacked again.
Though the
Jews had been given full rights of citizenship from the very beginning,
they continuously committed acts of treason and treachery. Some had had
to be expelled and others had been killed as a result of guilty
judgments given during appointed arbitrations. The subsequent
generations of Jews were never held responsible for the misdeeds of the
Jews of Madina. The Muslims had always treated them justly and kindly,
as they had been in Christendom for 2,000 years for the alleged
crucifixion of Isa ❪AS❫.
The following year, the sixth after
Hijrah, in accordance with several traditions of the time, the Prophet ï·º
had journeyed to Makkah to perform Umrah ❪the lesser Pilgrimage❫. He
had been accompanied by 1,400 Companions and they had been unarmed.
Despite ALL established and accepted traditions of the times, the chiefs
of Quraysh had refused them admission.
However, low in moral
and strength, the Quraysh had signed a peace treaty with the Prophet ï·º.
Known as the Hudaybiyah Treaty, the terms of this treaty had appeared
highly unfavorable, even humiliating, for the Muslims. By virtue of this
treaty though, the Muslims had made TREMENDOUS gains. Having been
driven out of Makkah and attacked three times, Muslims were finally
recognized as an equal force, to be treated respectfully and taken
seriously. The peace treaty had provided an opportunity for Islam to be
witnessed, first hand, by the wavering or neutral people, as well as
parties that were hostile.
Many had sensed imminent victory of
Islam. As a result of the treaty, many people in Makkah and surrounding
Arab tribes had either embraced Islam or made peace with the Prophet ï·º.
As soon as the treaty had been signed, the Prophet ï·º sent letters to
various neighboring Arab and non-Arab rulers, including Chosroes of Iran
and Heraclitus of the Byzantine Empire. He had invited them all to
Islam and had assured them that he did not covet their kingdoms or
riches. He had vowed that if they surrendered themselves to serve and
worship the One True God, Allah ï·», they could retain both.
Continuing in their hostility, the Quraysh had soon broke the Treaty of
Hudaybiyah. The Prophet ï·º then marched on Makkah, capturing the town.
After Makkah had fell, the world witnessed unparalleled acts of mercy,
forgiveness and generosity. Not one single drop of blood had been shed.
Everybody who had remained indoors were granted security of life and
property.
The Prophet ï·º forgave:
🔹 Those who had been the worst foes he ever had in life
🔹 Those who had persecuted him
🔹 Those who had planned to kill him
🔹 Those who had driven him out of Makkah
🔹 Those who had marched on Madina three times in hopes of defeating the Muslims
The neighboring Byzantine Empire had then prepared to attack and
destroy the Muslim community in Madina. However, when the Prophet ï·º had
marched to Tabuk on the northern border, his determination, courage and
timely response made the enemy lose heart and withdraw.
🔸 SOCIETY
The Prophet ï·º had been surrounded by hostile enemy forces and
ultimately triumphed over each of them. He had created a new society
based on justice and laid the foundations of a just and compassionate
family, society and state. Throughout those years, he had continued to
purify souls and uplift the morals of the followers of Islam. He had
changed the lives of MULTITUDES of men and women, while bringing them to
COMPLETE surrender to the One Creator, Allah ï·». The mission was
complete. Through his Sunnah and the Quran, mankind had been given the
Light and Way of a godly life.
These events had heralded the
birth of the most BRILLIANT civilization in the world. Remarkably, this
epic revolution had transformed not only Arabia, but ALL of mankind, for
ALL times to come. Counting ALL the various battles, the revolution
cost no more than 750 lives, most of which had been opponents. Even
still, those who have exterminated THOUSANDS of people in pursuit of
THEIR own civilizational ideals often malign the Prophet ï·º, portraying
him as a man of violence.
In the tenth year after migration to
Madina, the Prophet ï·º had made his only Hajj. He had given a sermon in
the Plain of Arafat of UNSURPASSABLE beauty and lasting value in which
had expressed that, ❝No man has any right as lord over other men. ALL
men are equal, whatever their origin, color or nationality.❞
The
Prophet Muhammad ï·º died in a few months later in the eleventh year after
Hijrah. He was buried in the house in which he had lived in Madina.
The Prophet ï·º had been merciful, kind and compassionate. He had
possessed a character of EXQUISITE beauty and charm. He had never abused
anyone and spoke softly, and had forgiven even his worst enemies. He
has lived a very simple life, even repaired his own shoes and clothes.
He had lived VERY frugally, sometimes there wasno food was cooked in his
household for days. He had loved children and even taught others to
show kindness to animals.
Such is the exquisite example of the
Prophet Muhammad ï·º. According to EVERY standard by which human greatness
can be measured, he had been MATCHLESS. There has been no man greater,
even unto this day.
